Black King mushrooms are a fun hybrid between oyster mushrooms and king trumpets. This Japanese variety is very dense and meaty. The mushrooms have large edible stems similar to an oyster mushroom yet slightly softer. The unique flavor and peppery aftertaste of Black King mushrooms means they can hold their own when cooked in soups and chili. They are a wonderful addition to pasta as well. The creative culinary possibilities with this mushroom are endless!
Health Benefits
This oyster mushroom cross has a slew of health benefits: they are fat free, low in calories, and packed with vitamins and minerals. If you’re trying to introduce more iron, calcium, Vitamin C, or B complex vitamins into your diet, this is a great mushroom for you! In addition, these mushrooms may have cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant properties. Black King mushrooms are a great option if you’re looking for a healthy mushroom to add to your weekly grocery list.
Texture + Recommended Preparation
Black King mushrooms are versatile and can be used in many of the same ways as an oyster or king trumpet mushroom. A simple sauté in butter or oil yields a deliciously flavorful accompaniment to nearly any meal. This variety of mushroom has an interesting peppery kick, so it will be delicious alongside an expertly grilled steak. The stems of the Black Pearl can be sliced into rounds and sautéed or chopped and added into your favorite dish.
We recommend you eat your Black King mushrooms fresh. However, if you’d like to preserve these mushrooms, they can be frozen after a quick, three-minute blanch in boiling water. You can also dry the mushrooms in an oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Store them in an airtight container and rehydrate them by placing them in a bowl of warm water.
