Fall Cooking with Gourmet Mushrooms

Fall Cooking with Gourmet Mushrooms

Home chefs throughout Minnesota are jumping with joy that fall has arrived! We love a good barbecue or picnic as much as anyone, but we’re ready for some new seasonal ingredients and savory recipes. The cool weather and changing leaves of fall officially signal the start of “comfort food” season.

Fall is the perfect time to include R&R Cultivation’s organic, gourmet mushrooms in your cooking. We’re already enjoying earthy and hearty ingredients like squash, root veggies, kale, and brussel sprouts. Adding mushrooms to stews, pastas, and roasts can increase your dish’s micronutrients and stretch your recipes without adding many calories.

Fall Flavor Pairings with R&R Cultivation Mushrooms

Mushrooms can be combined with almost any savory ingredient to create a filling and delicious dish. Here are some of our favorite combinations:

  • Add mushrooms to your risotto and wild rice recipes, including wild rice soup (a fall classic)!
  • Balsamic mushrooms and mushroom gravy go great with steak, pot roasts, and many other beef main courses.
  • Mushrooms and warm grains are a match made in heaven. If you enjoy savory breakfasts, why not make oatmeal with mushrooms? These bowls taste great with a poached or soft-boiled egg, and they are a great way to have a quick, warm breakfast on chilly mornings.

If you like to stick to the classics, you can add mushrooms to nearly any savory fall dish. And if you’re someone who likes to experiment in the kitchen, why not give one of our mushroom recipes a try this fall?

The Best Ways to Cook Gourmet Mushrooms

Certain cooking methods are better than others depending on what you hope to achieve with your mushrooms. If you’d like to add a rich umami flavor to a sauce or stew, mushroom powder is a great choice. But, if you’d rather add volume and texture to these same dishes, we’d recommend adding halved or quartered fresh mushrooms instead.

Speaking of texture – if you’re making a stir fry or another dish where mushrooms are added at the end, you can make your mushrooms nice and crispy by sauteing them separately from other veggies. Just remember not to salt the mushrooms until the end! Otherwise the salt will pull out moisture and make it difficult to get a crispy exterior.

When you’re cooking with gourmet mushrooms the possibilities are endless. There is a mushroom recipe for every season, but fall may offer the most variety when it comes to savory, umami-filled dishes. Which mushroom dish are you excited to cook this fall?
